The Role of the Team Leader with the Group

Much of the value of the team as a group in staff development comes from the interaction and participation of all team members. The team leader’s role, then, is to stimulate and support the group participation. His is the responsibility to provide a structure in which this may happen. This requires some advance planning. There must be a suitable place for group meetings, one of the many resources for which the team leader must look. He needs to find some room which is not too large or yet so small that the group will be crowded uncomfortably. He must have ideas to present, yet encourage the group to bring out their own ideas.

Just as with individual supervisory sessions, it is a good idea to have a regular time for meetings so that all may take this into account in their planning. Also like individual sessions, it is important that all participants understand the various purposes of haying meetings and have come to some agreement as to how they may be used. Some of the meetings, as we shall see in the following section, may be needed for administrative matters. However, here we are focusing on those meetings which are concerned with staff development. The team leader may suggest that there is a certain amount of time available for such meetings – possibly alternately with administrative meetings. He will then wish to explore with the group how they may use these meetings. If he has identified some appropriate areas, he may put his ideas forward; but this is best done by way of suggestion and inquiry rather than by simply presenting a programme already laid out. Members of the group may have other suggestions. Eventually a programme may be agreed. On the whole it is better not to undertake too ambitious or long term a programme. Perhaps a short series of discussion topics is planned, or the group agrees to try a round of case consultation with each member presenting once. At the end of the agreed series, the group can review what has been accomplished. The format may be continued or a new programme suggested. It allows for flexibility and variation in the meetings, and changes in the persons selected to have responsibility for leading the group.

Sometimes the team leader may undertake to plan a series of meetings and either present topics himself or get selected others to do so. At other times it may be agreed that two or three of the workers will form a small sub-committee for planning purposes. The team leader’s role in the latter case becomes that of consultant or enabler, should the committee wish to confer with him. Normally the team leader tends to chair the meeting in his role of team leader; but depending on the nature of individual meetings, someone else may be leading or there may be rotating chairmen for a particular series. An essential the team leader must keep in mind regarding
